President Donald Trump’s marketing campaign unloaded on Jeff Classes, the former attorney normal who is trying to get his aged U.S. Senate seat in Alabama, accusing him of trying to mislead GOP voters into imagining the commander in chief supports him.
In a letter sent this week, the Trump campaign’s chief running officer, Michael Glassner, excoriated Classes for claiming to supporters in mailers that he is “Trump’s #1 Supporter.”
“We only believe your marketing campaign is accomplishing this to confuse President Trump’s faithful supporters in Alabama into believing the President supports your candidacy in the upcoming principal operate-off election,” Glassner mentioned. “Almost nothing could be further more from the real truth.”
Classes is in a Republican principal struggle in Alabama, as the GOP appears to take again the seat currently held by Democrat Doug Jones, who narrowly defeated disgraced former Judge Roy Moore in a 2017 distinctive election. Jones is considered a single of the most vulnerable senators up for election this year.
Classes will deal with college football coach Tommy Tuberville in a runoff election for the GOP nomination in July. Trump has endorsed Tuberville.
Trump fired Classes from top the Justice Division in November 2018 immediately after he continuously lambasted the former Alabama lawmaker for recusing himself from overseeing distinctive counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference throughout the 2016 election.
Classes was a single of Trump’s earliest supporters in the 2016 presidential marketing campaign. “Devil’s Discount,” a reserve created by reporter Josh Inexperienced, reviews that Classes was persuaded to again Trump by former White Property chief strategist Steve Bannon.
